Diminution (2022)

This work explores the concept of reducing forms within the context of a graphically styled image. Looking at the relationship between form and colour, this series aims to question the incompleteness of form. What happens in the void of the missing piece? How does that affect our ability to relate to the work? At what point does the image change and become something else, because we no long recognise what we see?

The project was inspired by photographs taken of the Tate Modern installation ‘Ice Watch’ by Olafur Eliasson and Minik Rosing in 2018. The melting ice blocks contained an intriguing mix of tones and forms trapped within them, and the photographs captured a moment in time which would be lost forever as the ice continued to decay in the warmth of the cityscape. Much later, the images became isolated from the context and scale of the environment and took on the appearance of something much grander and therefore more concerning. It became apparent that whether the source is a tiny ice cube or a mountainous range, the message remains the same, we are witnessing the loss due to energies beyond our control.

My work aims to subtly challenge viewer’s perceptions of dimensionality and raise questions on the composition. The conceptual ideas underlying the piece invite engaging and thought-provoking discussions about the contemporary world.
